Almost Impossible To Make Slumdog Millionaire Today, Says Director Danny Boyle

Last Updated: Slumdog Millionaire revolves around the story of a boy from Mumbai's Juhu slums who lands on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Nearly two decades after Slumdog Millionaire made history at the Oscars, director Danny Boyle is reflecting on the film and its impact. The story of a boy from Mumbai's Juhu slums who lands on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? It became a global hit and won eight Academy Awards in 2009. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Boyle said the film couldn't be made today. 'We wouldn't be able to make that now. And that's how it should be," he said. Boyle said it is 'time to reflect" on a British director telling a story based in India. 'We have to look at the cultural baggage we carry and the mark that we've left on the world." He added that Slumdog Millionaire 'felt radical" at the time it was made, nearly 20 years ago. He explained that only a few crew members from the UK travelled to Mumbai. The rest of the team was local. The goal was to work within Indian culture. 'We made the decision that only a handful of us would go to Mumbai. We'd work with a big Indian crew and try to make a film within the culture. But you're still an outsider. It's still a flawed method. That kind of cultural appropriation might be sanctioned at certain times. But at other times it cannot be," he said. Boyle also mentioned that if such a film were made today, he would want a young Indian filmmaker to direct it. Despite the challenges, Boyle said he was 'proud of the film." Along with actors Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Madhur Mittal and Anil Kapoor, the film's success brought Boyle into the spotlight as a major director. But he said he never wanted to become a typical Hollywood name. 'It all comes back to punk, really. Not that my work is truly revolutionary or radical… I believe in popular entertainment. I want to push the boat out, but take the popular audience with me," he said. Boyle's latest film, 28 Years Later, is now in theatres. It is the third installment in the 28 Days Later series, following 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007). The film, written by Alex Garland, stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams and Ralph Fiennes. Boyle said real-world events like Brexit and the COVID pandemic played a big role in shaping the story this time. First Published:

Farrell adamant Lions 'won't suger-coat' Argentina loss

The Lions lost after their second-half fightback on Friday was cut short by Santiago Cordero's match-winning try for the Pumas in the 59th minute. Farrell's squad, comprised of leading players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, travel to Australia on Saturday before facing the Perth-based Western Force a week later in the first of several warm-up games ahead of a three-Test series with the Wallabies. Argentina, ranked fifth in the world, had already defeated France, New Zealand, Australia and world champions South Africa in the past 12 months, with the Pumas tough opponents for a 'scratch' Lions side playing their first match of the tour. But Lions head coach Farrell, seconded to the combined side from his 'day job' as Ireland boss, refused to cite a lack of cohesion as the reason for his side's error-strewn display in front of a sold-out Aviva Stadium. "We made it a tough game," he said. "Congratulations to Argentina, they thoroughly deserved to win the match. I'm sure that's a big moment in Argentinean rugby history. "We had plenty of opportunities and we should have done better to convert them, but the whole story of the game is that we compounded too many errors." The former England international added: "I wouldn't give familiarity as an excuse. We need to be better than that. The Lions are good players coming together. "We won't sugar-coat this. We need to be honest because if we're not honest, how do we gain trust with each other? "Losing hurts, especially in this jersey. We need to find the solutions pretty quickly and be honest with ourselves because some good has to come from this." Farrell, reflecting on what had gone wrong against the Pumas, said: "The amount of balls that we threw blindly either on to the floor or to the opposition was a standout. "The scraps on the floor always seemed to go to Argentina, so there was a bit more fight and hunger from them that we can't accept." Maro Itoje criticised the Lions' lack of precision as the lock's first outing as their captain ended in the tourists' first defeat by Argentina in eight matches. "We gave ourselves numerous opportunities but we weren't accurate enough at times and weren't consistent enough in piling pressure on to Argentina," he said. Friday's reverse was the first time the Lions had lost their opening tour match since 1971. But that 15-11 defeat by Queensland in Brisbane was a prelude to one of the Lions' most celebrated triumphs -- a 2-1 Test series win over the All Blacks in New Zealand.

Faridabad Man Kills 'Missing' Daughter-in-Law, Buries Her In 10-Foot Pit Outside Home

Last Updated: The woman, identified as Tanu Singh, had been missing since April and was found dead earlier this week following an investigation. A 24-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her in-laws and buried in a pit outside their house in Faridabad's Roshan Nagar area, police said on Friday. The woman, identified as Tanu Singh, had been missing since April and was found dead earlier this week following an investigation. Tanu had married Arun Singh, a resident of Roshan Nagar, two years ago, with her family alleging that she faced regular harassment over dowry since the marriage. Police said that on April 23, a 10-foot-deep pit was dug in front of the Singh family's home. According to neighbours, the family had claimed it was for drainage work and later covered it with plastic sheets. Two days later, on April 25, Tanu's father-in-law, Bhoop Singh, filed a missing person report at Palla police station, saying she had gone to the market and not returned. He went so far as to label her mentally disturbed in an attempt to downplay the crime as merely a missing person case. During the investigation, police found inconsistencies in the family's statements. On further questioning, Bhoop Singh allegedly confessed to killing Tanu on the night of April 21 and burying her in the pit. Her body was recovered from the site and identified by her clothes. 'We are currently investigating the possible roles of other family members. The motive appears to be dowry-related, but further inquiries are ongoing," said ACP Rajesh Kumar Lochan. An FIR has been registered against Bhoop Singh, his wife Sonia, son Arun, and daughter Kajal under charges of murder and relevant sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Bhoop and Arun are in custody, while Sonia and Kajal are absconding, said officials. Tanu's family claimed she was harassed soon after marriage. 'Tanu came back to live with us at our maternal home just months after the wedding because she was not being treated well… When we finally sent her back, the torture resumed. They wouldn't let her speak to us, not even on phone calls," said her sister, Preeti. Police are continuing the investigation and have not ruled out more arrests. Andhra Teen Sexually Assaulted By 14 Men For 2 Years, Now 8 Months Pregnant

Last Updated: 17 people have been arrested in connection to the crime, along with one minor, and an investigation into the matter is currently underway. A 15-year-old girl in Andhra Pradesh was admitted to the hospital after she got pregnant after allegedly being raped by 14 men over two years. The girl was first sexually assaulted in Class 8 and endured ongoing abuse until two months ago, when she was in Class 10, all while continuing to attend school, reported the Indian Express, citing District Superintendent of Police V Ratna. The girl, who lives with her mother, was not only assaulted but was also threatened and blackmailed by the accused. Reportedly, she belongs to the minority community. 'It was her young age, vulnerability, and caste because of which the men could prey on and exploit her for two years, leaving her pregnant at 15. The systems that are in place to check on her welfare failed. Her class teacher did not even report that she had dropped out of school,'' Superintendent of Police V Ratna told The Indian Express. The police have arrested 17 in connection to the crime, along with one minor, and an investigation into the matter is currently underway. A similar incident took place in September 2024 when a 13-year-old girl became pregnant allegedly after she was raped by a government school peon in Uttar Pradesh's Farrukhabad. 'The family of the 13-year-old girl has lodged a case against the accused men. The girl had gone to defecate at night when Pankaj and Amit of the village caught her and took her to an empty house where Amit raped her while Pankaj stood outside and kept a watch," a police official had said, citing the complaint. 'The accused raped her by stuffing a cloth in her mouth. After this, the girl was threatened that if she complained, they would kill her. But when the girl became five months pregnant, her mother came to know about the matter. After which the mother approached the local police," the official had stated.
